Separation Distances Survey for Detergent Factory
A new detergent factory in northern Israel has approached our company after trying to obtain a poison permit for many months.
The factory was required to conduct a separation distances survey regarding an oxidizing powder, Sodium Carbonate Peroxyhydrate.
The substance isn’t found in the appendix to the separation distances regulations, which made matters more complicated.
As long as the plant didn’t have a poison permit, it wasn’t officially allowed to start working in a regulated manner. Due to this, every delay in obtaining the permit was money lost for the entrepreneurs, both on work hours going to waste, and on maintaining the cost of insurances, equipment, rent, etc. The Sutok company conducted the survey after fully reviewing the data and taking in account various possible scenarios. Let it be noted that there is no data for Sodium Carbonate Peroxyhydrate in the Israel Ministry of Environmental Protection regulations, or in the standard computerized software.
The scenarios taken in account: 1. A scenario where the material is wetted, resulting in a chemical reaction with the water. The reaction produces hydrogen peroxide, water and heat. The hydrogen peroxide breaks up at an accelerated rate, and the during the chemical breakup of one ton of Sodium Carbonate Peroxyhydrate, over 600 cubic meters of gases, including steam and oxygen, are released. The release of the gases during a short period of time in a structure where the air exchange rate is negligible may cause a shock wave. A large number of calculations were done in order to use the data in a computerized software for separation distances.
2. The material that was dissolved in the water reacts with metals, hydrocarbons, and surrounding materials and may cause an explosion or a toxic cloud.
Two weeks after submitting the forms, after many months of waiting, the factory received a type C poison permit (a poison permit that must be renewed every 3 years), as opposed to the type A poison permit that was originally requested (a poison permit that must be renewed once a year with an especially high fee). In conclusion, using thorough, professional environmental consulting and close guidance for the customer with the authorities, a great deal of discontent and expenses may be spared.
