Our approach centers around collecting water from fog in remote areas of western South America. Much of this region is arid and mountainous, and many rural communities suffer from water scarcity. However, fog often covers much of the area during the year. Thus, we can build fog collection structures to make water for drinking and household/agricultural use more accessible to these remote communities. The setup, as shown in the picture below is quite simple. Meshes, which are mechanically and chemically tuned to collect water from fog, are built vertically. As fog passes through these meshes, water condenses on the material and drips down to a receptacle below. Individuals can either go to collect water from the receptacle, or a simply piping system can be developed to transport the water to larger containers or directly to end users. Costs are low, and the setup can be easily scaled up.
