Describe the product you have chosen.
I have chosen a sustainable plastic product designed by the Californian company, Mango Materials. They received waste methane from local facilities, such as landfills, and then use bacteria to transform the gas into polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) pellets which is a type of bioplastic. Additionally, the pellets biodegrade within 6 weeks, leaving no micro plastics. The pellets have various applications such as activewear fibers and cosmetic packaging.
Why do you consider it circular?
This product is circular because through the materials used in its product design, it designs out waste and pollution by harnessing a by-product greenhouse gas, methane, that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere and contribute greatly to the greenhouse effect. It also does this by designing a biodegradable product that removes the issue of micro plastics in the issue in the ocean once the product is no longer useable.
Which principles of CE models are being used?
Sustainable Product Design
What are the economic and environmental benefits?
Economically, the local facilities are making a profit off of their by-product, methane. Environmentally, there is a reduction in methane in the atmosphere which contributes to the greenhouse effect (aka global warming). There is also an assurance that micro plastics will not be generated from this product since it biodegrades in less than 2 months.
Which one of the “5 business-models” does it belong to?
waste to wealth
