The pile, that everyday object we find everywhere. Not only in our watches or in the remote control; the battery also powers small single-use electronic devices. For example, once used, the digital pregnancy test will end up in the trash. Imagine for a moment an ecological paper battery, without metal, without toxic product. BeFC has launched this challenge. This young french start-up has designed the battery of the future, providing clean energy to low-power disposable medical devices. These miniature recyclable batteries, made of layers of cellulose, use enzymes and a biocatalysis system to produce electricity. The sensors are activated by a drop of water, sweat, saliva, blood or urine. This technology is revolutionary by its composition based on paper and enzymes, it is natural, metal-free, lithium-free, without risk of inflammation. By reducing these wastes, we reduce recycling and disposal costs, thereby minimizing the environmental impact. For the consumer customer, this green battery, with a life of one day to two months depending on the power, will not cost him more than a so-called classic battery. Thin and flexible, bioenzymatic batteries are also adapted to the requirements of electronic devices and packaging, which are always thinner and more connected. Some devices can already store information and connect to WiFi. The potential is huge! And that’s what convinced the Grand Jury, which put BeFC on the first step of the podium, marking him as the winner of this 2020 edition.
